Description
The Atlantic Pavilion, formerly known as Warehouse A, is a Grade I listed building located at the south end of the east side of Albert Dock. It was constructed between 1841 and 1845 by J Hartley. The building features an iron frame and brick construction with stone dressings, topped by an iron-clad roof. It stands five storeys tall and consists of 17 bays, including a 7 x 3-bay recess. The facade facing the dock has a recessed ground floor supported by a Doric colonnade made of iron columns above a rubble granite dock wall. The building has rusticated quoins and a parapet, with segmental-headed windows, most of which are blind on the eastern side. There is visible war damage at the north end that remains unrepaired, exposing the underlying structure. Albert Dock is recognized as one of the earliest enclosed docks in the world and serves as a complete example of this type of architecture.
