Description

The Britannia Pavilion and The Colonnades, formerly known as Warehouse B and C, are located at Albert Dock and were built between 1841 and 1845 by architect J Hartley. These former warehouses are constructed with an iron frame and brick, featuring stone dressings and an iron-clad roof. The building has five storeys and is designed in an L-shape, with 47 bays facing Gower Street, where the first four bays are recessed. The west facade has 55 bays, including three recesses of nine by five bays. The dock-facing facade features a recessed ground floor supported by a Doric colonnade made of iron columns, with two granite columns at the corners, above a granite rubble dock wall. The building is adorned with quoins and a top parapet, and it has segmental-headed windows. There are two entrances on Gower Street, each flanked by granite gate piers. Albert Dock is recognized as one of the earliest enclosed docks in the world and serves as a complete example of this architectural type.
