Description
The South Chapel, built around 1862 by architects Lucy and Littler, is located in Anfield Cemetery. It is constructed from snecked stone and features banded slate roofs. The chapel consists of a nave with an apse and aisles, all under pitched roofs that end in gabled porches at the west ends. The north porch supports a tower, which has a north entrance with two orders and a sexfoil in the gable. The first stage of the tower includes set-back buttresses, while the bell stage features two-light traceried openings with louvres and a cornice adorned with gargoyles at the angles. The spire is topped with angle pinnacles and lucarnes. The nave is supported by angle buttresses and has a prominent five-light west window with Geometrical tracery. The aisles, which have six bays, contain two-light windows; the north aisle includes an east entrance, and the south aisle has two entrances on the south side. The apse is seven-sided and features lancet windows with shafts and a cornice with gargoyles. The rainwater heads are dated 1862.
