Description
The boathouse on the east side of the lake in Stanley Park was built in 1870 by E R Robson. It is a small, square, single-storey structure made of coursed sandstone ashlar and designed in the Gothic style. The southwest elevation facing the lake features a large Gothic-arched boat entry, which has late 20th century or early 21st century metal double doors that are not considered of special interest. A low-level ramp that once led into the lake below the doorway has been removed.
Originally, the flat roof of the boathouse served as a plinth and was topped with a timber shelter resembling a pavilion, which had unglazed Gothic cusped lights and a gabled roof covered in slate. This timber pavilion was destroyed by fire in the late 20th century and has since been replaced with early 21st century metal railings, which are also not of special interest. These railings now allow the roof of the boathouse to serve as a viewpoint.
On the northeast side of the boathouse, there is a central stone stair that leads down into the boat store. This area features a Gothic-arched entrance doorway with a timber door frame and an overlight, although the door itself has been removed. Access to the stair is currently protected by an early 21st century metal grille, which is not considered of special interest. Flanking the stair are two additional flights of stone steps that lead up onto the roof of the boathouse and the site of the former shelter.
