Description
The crematorium at Anfield Cemetery was built between 1894 and 1896, likely designed by J. Rhind. It is constructed from snecked stone with a slate roof and features a T-plan layout, which includes a south porch and a north wing, along with a northwest tower. The porch has a gable and a pointed-arched entrance without capitals, and it is flanked by tall gabled buttresses. The returns of the building contain 5-light windows adorned with Perpendicular tracery and two king mullions with niches. The wing features 3-light windows with gables. The tower is supported by angle buttresses that also hold niches, and it has louvred bell openings at the top, along with an embattled parapet on a corbel table and angle gargoyles. There is a 20th-century extension to the east. Inside, there is a small chapel with an arched opening and flanking arched entrances leading to the furnaces behind. This crematorium is notable for being the fourth to open in the country.
