Description
The North Catacomb, built around 1863 by architects Lucy and Littler, is a catacomb located in Anfield Cemetery. It is constructed of stone with a slate roof and features nine bays. The exterior includes weathered buttresses and a corbelled parapet adorned with gargoyles. Each bay has three trefoil-headed panels, some of which are inscribed with names. The central passage has segmental arches supported by wall piers with angel corbels. The entrances to the end bays on the north side feature pointed arches, with the mouldings seamlessly integrated into the wall and flush gables that project through the parapet, embellished with crockets and fleurons. The returns have round apses with three lancets fitted with iron grilles. The roof includes skylights, most of which were boarded up in 1984. Inside, there are two chambers with iron gates, and quatrefoil piers that support diaphragm arches and segmental pointed arches leading to side recesses.
