Description

The Church of St George is a Grade I listed church built between 1812 and 1814, designed by Thomas Rickman with John Cragg. It is constructed from ashlar stone in the Perpendicular style and features a west tower, a nave, and a short chancel, with low porches flanking both the tower and chancel. The tower is supported by diagonal buttresses and includes a single pointed arched door and a three-light window above. It also has a three-faced clock and three-light bell openings that are partially glazed and partially louvred. All windows are adorned with cast iron tracery, and the tower is topped with an open traceried battlemented parapet featuring pinnacles at the corners. The flanking porches each have a two-light window, and the entrances on the north and south sides are embellished with carved spandrels and label moulds.

The nave consists of seven bays with buttresses and tall three-light windows, while the shallow chancel is highlighted by a six-light window. The side bays are low and battlemented, with a south entrance. Inside, the nave features arcades made of cast iron with traceried spandrels. The aisles have galleries with traceried panelled fronts, and the roof is constructed of cast iron on iron columns with arch braces, supported by tie rods across the width of the church. The east window and the west end of the balconies contain 19th-century stained glass by Shrigley and Hunt of Lancaster. The cast iron structure is noted as an important early example, encouraged by John Cragg, the owner of the Mersey Iron Foundry.
