Description

The Church of St Michael is a Grade I listed building constructed in 1814 by architects J. Cragg and T. Rickman. It is built of brick with significant iron detailing and features slate cladding. The church has a six-bay nave with varying aisles and a clerestory. A short west tower is supported by diagonal buttresses, while the chancel is short and includes a vestry to the north and a chapel to the south. The plinth is clad in slate within an iron frame.

The church has three-light windows with iron Perpendicular tracery located in the aisles, clerestory, and tower, which also features paired three-light bell openings. Arcaded parapets adorn the aisles, clerestory, and chancel, with the clerestory having slate cladding. The tower is topped with an arcaded embattled parapet and pinnacles.

Inside, the nave is divided by arcades with iron quatrefoil columns and traceried spandrels. The ceiling is supported by open iron trusses. The north aisle is wider than the south aisle and contains an organ in the eastern bay, featuring a flat ceiling with conical roof lights. The south aisle has a flat traceried ceiling, and there are cusped panels beneath the clerestory windows. The chancel arch consists of two orders, leading to a pointed vaulted chancel. The tower arch also has two orders and supports a gallery on three arches, with traceried panels. The east window of the chancel features early Gothic revival stained glass. This church is noted for being one of the earliest and most comprehensive uses of industrial materials in a major building, comparable to the Church of St. George on Heyworth Street.
