Description
The Carriage House, originally known as Holly Bank, dates from circa 1815 and was built for John Cragg. It is now divided into separate dwellings. The building is constructed of stucco with a slate roof. It is two storeys high with a four-bay arrangement, the central two bays projecting forward under a gable. The elevations feature diagonal buttresses. Parapets with quatrefoil panels are present in the flanking one-storey bays. Windows have chamfered reveals and label moulds, with three-light iron casements incorporating iron-framed diamond panes and ogival heads. The central entrance is recessed, featuring a four-centred head and arch resting on shafts with traceried spandrels, and leads to a half-glazed door. The side elevation facing the road originally contained a stable entrance with stone, pointed-arched openings, one with tracery and cusped spandrels. Two modern shopfronts have been inserted either side of this entrance. There is a coach house entrance with a round window in a gabled projection. A side entrance to the house has a hood and iron cresting. The eaves are supported by iron brackets, and iron supports are also visible on the chimney. The property also includes iron Gothic gate piers leading to the rear garden; these are square and feature open, decorated tracery. Much of the detailing is cast iron.
