Description
The City Education Offices, located at No. 14 Sir Thomas Street, is an office building constructed in 1898 by C.E. Deacon. It is designed in the Northern Renaissance style and features stone construction with a granite base. The building stands three storeys tall, with a basement and attic.
The ground floor showcases windows with carved jambs, arches, and spandrels, which are flanked by flat pilasters and topped with a pediment. The first and second floors have windows that include mullions and transoms, with the central bay's windows recessed and featuring segmental heads. There are two-storey oriel windows on either side, each with decorated bases. A rich frieze runs between the first and second floors, as well as above the second floor.
The cornice is prominent, and there are three richly ornamented dormers above, with the outer dormers featuring round pediments and balconies adorned with lion sculptures. Inside, there is a central hall and stairwell that includes a well for a lift. The building retains its original doors, ironwork, and a porter's lodge. A stained glass window displaying the city arms is located in the stairwell.
