Description
The Old Cottage is a house that likely dates from the 18th century, built as a rebuild of an earlier 17th-century structure. It was renovated in 1975 with rear extensions. The building is constructed of brick and rendered, topped with a slate roof. It features a three-bay cross-passage plan and has an axial chimney stack located between the second and third bays. The entrance door to the cross-passage is situated between the first and second bays. Each floor has three 2-light casement windows, with one window in each bay. The ground floor window in the first bay has single horizontal glazing bars, while the others have crossed glazing bars. The ground floor window in the central bay has a low segmental arched head, and the remaining windows are square-headed. The facade displays three S-shaped tie-plates. Inside, there are wooden service doorways in the cross-passage, with a lintel above the left door carved with three geometric patterns and the inscription "1614 RIS" above the right door. The bridging beams in the housepart show evidence of a scarf-joint, indicating the presence of an earlier firehood. The house may have been occupied by Richard Silcock, who had a will in 1616, or Richard Silcocke, who had a will in 1680.
