Description

Stanley Cottage is a late 17th-century farmhouse. It is constructed of handmade brick painted white, with a corrugated iron sheet roof and boxed eaves, all painted black, concealing a former thatched roof. A brick chimney is situated close to the left gable. The building originally had a two-bay baffle-entry plan, with the second bay projecting slightly to the front and rear. A third bay was originally at the left end, though this has since collapsed. The cottage has one and a half storeys, and a broad brick buttress is present on the left corner. A panelled door sits beside the buttress, and there are small sliding sash windows with glazing bars on the ground floor of each bay. The second bay features a brick label above its window, and very low 3-light sliding sash windows are set within the eaves. The right gable displays a blocked 3-light brick mullioned attic window above a later lean-to. The rear elevation has similar brick mullioned windows: five lights to the first bay and six lights to the second, with many of the lights now blocked. The interior is understood to contain an ovolo-moulded bressumer in the original housepart, along with similarly moulded surrounds to the twin doors leading to the parlour and buttery. Evidence suggests the second bay was originally lofted, while the housepart was only celled later. There is a possibility that an upper part of an internal partition contains a cruck truss.
