Description
The Old House is an early 19th-century house located in Upper Rawcliffe-with-Tarnacre. It features scored render with sandstone dressings and a slate roof, standing two storeys high with an attic. The main part of the east (garden) front is symmetrical, with end pilasters and a cornice topped with a blocking course. The windows are sashed with glazing bars. A central two-storey bow has a window with a plain stone surround on both floors, each containing three lights with square mullions. The two bays on either side of the bow have windows with plain reveals. The ground-floor window to the right of the bow has been converted into a door. To the right of the main facade is an additional bay with a lower cornice and similar windows. There are chimneys to the right of the bow and to the right of the main facade.
The west (entrance) facade has pilasters that match those on the east and features a cornice with a blocking course. A two-storey ashlar porch includes corner pilasters, a cornice, and a stepped parapet. The door is framed by a shouldered architrave within an attached Ionic porch, which is distyle in antis. The first-floor window also has a shouldered architrave. To the right of the porch is one bay with windows that have plain reveals. To the left, one bay of ashlar has a stair window with a semi-circular head and rebated surround. The bay to its left has windows with plain reveals, and further left, beyond a pilaster, is another bay with windows that have plain reveals. To its left is a door. The interior was not accessible at the time of the survey, but it is reported to contain no features of interest.
