Description

The Former Pennine Tower Restaurant at Lancaster Service Area, previously known as Forton Motorway Service Area, is a Grade II listed building located on the north-bound side of the M6. The building features an engaged hexagonal tower shaft at the south-east corner of the original service station. This tower contains two lifts, a curved staircase, and three small service lifts. Above, the cantilevered hexagonal restaurant, which is no longer in use, has an open sun deck on the roof.

The exterior of the hexagonal tower shaft showcases projecting cased stanchions with a narrow vertical window in the center of each wall face, and the walls are covered in corrugated asbestos sheeting. The cantilevered restaurant has glazed curtain walling, with window frames painted green, and a concrete and metal balcony railing for the sun deck above, which is also painted green and originally featured glazed panels.

Inside, the tower shaft, which is not accessible to the general public, retains two adjacent pentagonal lifts and a helical staircase leading to the sun deck, along with three small service lifts for transporting food to the restaurant. At the restaurant level, the lifts and stair shaft are surrounded by a lift foyer with flanking lavatories and a large servery. Originally, restaurant seating was arranged around the outside beneath the windows, but the original fixtures and fittings have been removed, and temporary partition walls have been erected to divide the space into offices, which are not in use. The servery still features its timber soffits, some geometric blue and white wall tiles, and fish-scale tiles forming an open screen.
