Description
The Forton, Cleveley and Holleth War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, which also includes additional names from the Second World War. It was relocated in 1996.
The memorial is made of grey and buff sandstone and stands on a circular base. It features a wheel-head cross with a shaft, plinth, and circular base, facing east, and has an overall height of approximately 2.9 meters. The cross is crafted from grey sandstone, with incised lines around the edge and along the arms, and a small panel of incised interlace on the front face of the foot. The shaft, made of buff sandstone, is rectangular in section, slightly wider than the foot of the cross, tapering slightly with rounded corners. The front face of the shaft displays a relief carving of a shield bearing a crown, beneath which is an inscription in relief within inset labels that reads:
TO THE/ HONOURED MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF/ FORTON AND DISTRICT/ WHO FELL/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918.
The plinth is slightly wider than the shaft, also rectangular in section and tapering. Its front face is incised with the names of 15 fallen soldiers. The other faces are plain, except for the left face of the plinth, which bears an inscription in incised lettering:
TO THE/ HONOURED/ MEMORY OF THE/ MEN OF FORTON/ WHO FELL IN THE/ 2ND WORLD WAR/ 1939-1945.
This inscription lists the five names of those who fell in that conflict. The base of the memorial is circular and divided into four quadrants.
