Description

Tawd Culvert, located approximately 250 meters west of Spencer's Bridge, is a canal culvert that carries the Leeds-Liverpool Canal over the River Tawd. The keystone is dated 1838, but it was likely rebuilt around 1771 and then reconstructed in 1838 for the Leeds-Liverpool Canal Company. The structure is made of sandstone ashlar and features a round-headed arch with run-out rusticated voussoirs. The vermiculated keystone displays the raised date "1838". Additional architectural details include a moulded cornice, a set-back parapet, and splayed abutments with ramped coping.
