Description

A row of six cottages stands on Walthew Green, near Roby Mill. Dating from the middle to later 18th century, the cottages have been altered since their original construction. They are built of coursed, graduated sandstone rubble, with a composition tile roof and stone slates on the porches. The cottages follow a long, rectangular double-depth plan, with each cottage presenting a single front to the road and arranged in halls-adjoining pairs. Each pair of cottages has two low storeys and one window. They have square-headed doorways, grouped in pairs, sheltered by three 20th-century lean-to porches. The windows are 3-light casements with thin lintels and modern joinery and leading. Ridge chimneys are present. Recent additions, built in a similar style, have been made to both ends of the row.
