Description
God's Providence Cottage is a small house dated 1690 above the doorway, although it was remodeled in the late 18th century or early 19th century. The building is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with quoins, while the left gable is rendered. It features a slate roof with rendered gable chimneys. The layout is a rectangular double-depth plan created by additions to the rear of the original single-depth range.
The cottage has two low storeys and two symmetrical windows, with remnants of a former drip-band at the left end. The central doorway is notable for its unusual raised roll-moulded surround made of red sandstone. Above the doorway is a large rectangular stone plaque with a similar surround, featuring sunk panels in the lower corners and an inscription that reads: "GODS PROVIDENCE/IS OUR IN HERITANCE/GHA/1690."
Each floor contains two oblong windows, with the ground floor windows having massive rectangular lintels made of red sandstone. All windows have raised sills and 20th-century three-light casements. On the left gable wall, there is a small blocked one-light window with a chamfered surround located towards the rear at ground floor level. The interior has been remodeled, but oak purlins can be seen at the first floor.
