Description

The south-western barn at Bickerstaffe Hall Farm dates from the late 18th century. It is constructed of brick in English garden wall bond, topped with a roof made of stone slate and slate. There are cart entrances on each side near the center, featuring segmental arches. Above the north-western entrance, which has an external sliding door, are the stone arms of the Earl of Derby. To the left of this entrance are two windows with plain reveals and a doorway situated between them. A pitching door provides access to the upper storey. On the right side, there are three low arched entrances, which are said to have housed ducks. Above these is an opening with plain reveals, and below the eaves is a similar opening. Both long walls of the barn have three rows of breathers. The right-hand gable wall features external steps leading to doorways on two levels, with this end of the building having been used as a granary. Inside, the main part of the barn consists of four bays. The roof trusses are made of hardwood and include tie-beams and raking struts, supported by brick pillars.
