Description

The north-eastern barn and attached engine house at Bickerstaffe Hall Farm dates from the late 18th century, with mid-19th century additions. It is constructed of brick and features a roof made of stone slate and slate. The south-east wall has a wider shippon end on the left, which includes a doorway and a pitching hole to its left. A gabled brick canopy protects the cart entrance. To the right, there is a ground floor door with a pitching door above it. The right side also has taller mid-19th century additions. On the left, there are windows on both floors, while the right side features a first-floor window above a wide gateway with a timber lintel. A wing projecting from the rear has external steps and a square plan chimney that tapers and has panelled sides. Inside, the main barn contains pegged king-post trusses, with the king-posts braced to the principals and the tie-beams supported on triangular brick piers. Between the barn and the 19th century additions is a segmental archway, and some drive shafts remain in the additions.
