BICKERSTAFFE HALL LANE SD 40 SW 13/27 Bickerstaffe Hall 11-10-1968 GV II

House. Mid-to-late C18. Brick in Flemish bond with some stone dressings and slate roof. Double-depth plan under M-roof. 2 storeys with attic, 3 bays. Facade has stone plinth and moulded stone eaves cornice. Windows are sashed with glazing bars and have stone sills and keyed rusticated lintels. Door, between 1st and 2nd bays, has painted surround with edge roll moulding under open timber lean-to porch. Re-set above the plinth between the 2nd and 3rd bays is a plaque carved with the shield of arms of the Stanley family and inscribed: '1667 ES'. Above the doorway is a plaque carved with an eagle and child. Chimneys on gables and between 2nd and 3rd bays. The right-hand (north) gable has a rainwater hopper cast with an eagle and the date '1772'. On the south side is a similar hopper, but the date is less easy to read. Interior: between the entrance hall and the stair hall is a keyed round arch with pilaster reveals and modillion cornice. The dog-leg stair rises in 4 flights and has an open string, 3 turned balusters to each tread, and a ramped handrail.
