Description
Bickerstaffe Hall is a house dating from the mid-to-late 18th century. It is built of brick in Flemish bond with some stone dressings and has a slate roof. The building has a double-depth plan and an M-shaped roof, standing two storeys tall with an attic and featuring three bays. The facade includes a stone plinth and a moulded stone eaves cornice. The windows are sashed with glazing bars, stone sills, and keyed rusticated lintels. The door, located between the first and second bays, has a painted surround with edge roll moulding and is sheltered by an open timber lean-to porch. Above the plinth, between the second and third bays, is a plaque featuring the shield of arms of the Stanley family, inscribed with '1667 ES'. There is also a plaque above the doorway carved with an eagle and child. The house has chimneys on the gables and between the second and third bays. The right-hand (north) gable features a rainwater hopper cast with an eagle and the date '1772', while the south side has a similar hopper with a less legible date. Inside, there is a keyed round arch with pilaster reveals and a modillion cornice between the entrance hall and the stair hall. The dog-leg stair rises in four flights, featuring an open string, three turned balusters on each tread, and a ramped handrail.
