Description

Millets Farmhouse and the attached barn-cum-shippon are located in Up Holland and date from the late 18th century to the early 19th century, with the barn specifically dated 1835. The main part of the house is pebble-dashed with sandstone dressings and has a slate roof, while the rear section is finished in scored render with a stone slate roof. The barn is constructed from coursed squared sandstone rubble and also features a slate roof.

The house has an irregular layout, with the older section linking the south end of the barn to the rear of the main range, which is double-depth and faces south. The main range is two storeys high with two symmetrical windows, rusticated quoins, and 16-pane unhorned sashed windows with raised sills and moulded architraves. It has overhanging eaves and gable chimneys. The west gable wall includes a doorway towards the rear with a moulded architrave and a glazed and panelled door with margin panes, a 4-pane sashed window to the right, and oversailing verges with wavy bargeboards.

The older section, now a two-window rear wing, features a glazed porch and windows with altered glazing on the ground floor and 4-pane sashes above. The barn has a unique longitudinally divided four-bay plan, with shippons and stables on the west side and the barn on the east. The west side includes square-headed doorways at the center and each end, a 6-pane fixed window left of center, a small window right of center, a circular pitching hole (now glazed) above the central doorway, and a datestone to the left inscribed: MA/ TA/ 1835. The east side has a waggon doorway in the center.
