Description
Stag Lodge to Cuerden Hall, incorporating a gateway, was designed by Lewis Wyatt between 1816 and 1819, although it was built later. The structure is made of ashlar stone. The gate piers are very tall and feature demicolumns attached to both the front and rear faces, with rusticated sides and heavily moulded caps that are topped by pedestals that originally held a stag on the left and a hawk on the right, though only parts of these remain. Each side has a high flanking wall with a moulded cornice and a rusticated pillar topped with a ball finial. There is a 2-light window in each wall; the right window is false, while the left window serves as the front window to the lodge.
The lodge itself is a rectangular single-storey building with a flat roof and a central chimney. It features pilastered corners, a pilaster at the centre of the south side, and a moulded cornice. Next to the gate pier is a blocked former doorway with a hoodmould. The lodge has two windows on the side and two at the end, all with 2 lights and a stone mullion. The rear wall has a modern extension. The lodge is positioned as originally designed by Wyatt, but it is located on the opposite side of the drive. Drawings of the lodge can be found in the RIBA Drawings Collection, numbered 173, 174, and 175.
