Description
The iron gates at the foot of the terrace steps to the east of Cuerden Hall are ornamental and were possibly designed in 1819 by Lewis Wyatt. They are situated between stone gatepiers in the boundary wall of the garden. The gates feature tall iron railings that extend to open-work iron pillars, from which a pair of gates hangs. The tops of the gates are ramped down to the center, emphasizing a vertical design. The railings, pillars, and gates consist of straight vertical principal bars, with short slim dog bars rising between them, linked by wavy braces below the heads. Each gate and railing, flanked by twisted bars, has more narrowly-set bars supporting decorative scrolls in the center. An upper border of volutes beneath the top rail carries six small urn finials, while the pillars also feature raised urn finials.
