Description

Stacksteads Mill is a cotton spinning mill built in 1833, as indicated by the date on the keystone of the original entrance at the north-west corner, which is now enclosed. The mill is currently used as a shoe factory. It features watershot coursed sandstone blocks and a stone slate roof with ridge ventilators and some skylights on the south side. The building has a rectangular plan with 11 by 3 windows and a 3 by 2 extension at the east end, while the former engine house is located at the west end. Weaving sheds beyond this and a modern office block at the east end, along with an extension at the south-west corner, are not included in the listing.

The mill stands four and one-half storeys tall, with windows of diminishing height, all having straight sills and heads, and altered glazing. There are double loading doors in the fifth bay of the top floor and triple gutter brackets. At the north-west corner, the forward extension to the gabled engine house features a large round-headed wagon-entrance arch, a window above it, and a re-entrant wall with a clock face at the first floor.

Inside, the former entrance door at the right end of the ground floor is round-headed and has a fanlight with radiating glazing bars, along with the keystone dated "1833." There is a stone staircase at the west end and 10-bay workrooms with double rows of slim iron columns that support wooden beams in iron shoes, while the engine house is of fireproof construction. The mill was built by the brothers Robert and John Munn.
