Description

This is a 17th-century farmhouse, subsequently altered and now divided into two separate dwellings. It is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with a stone slate roof and gable chimneys. The building follows an end-baffle-entry plan, featuring a projecting porch on the right-hand side. The farmhouse is two storeys high. The two-storey porch has a window on each floor; the upper window has two lights separated by a flush mullion. A doorway is now inserted in the centre of the main façade, and there are two altered windows on each floor. The interior is of particular interest, especially the second bay. This bay contains a large inglenook fireplace with a bressummer beam and a small attached room (a "heck") with a witch-post. The head of this witch-post is carved with a diagonal cross, a rare feature, with only one other known example in the local area (at Newhouse Farmhouse). A later farmhouse extension at the rear is not part of this listed building.
