Description
Old House Farmhouse is a 18th-century farmhouse and barn combined under one roof, which has been altered and is now used as a house. It is constructed of watershot coursed sandstone and random rubble, topped with a stone slate roof that features two ridge chimneys. The building has four bays, with the first and second bays originally serving as the barn. It stands two storeys tall, and a notable feature is the left gable wall at the southwest end, which projects at both the front and rear and rises above the eaves to a stepped and embattled parapet. This parapet has round openings on the sides and at the apex, serving as a windbreaker to protect the roof; it is said to have been rebuilt in 1879 to replace a similar structure. Other significant features include a segmental arched wagon entrance in the second bay, which has been glazed as a window, three breathers located under the eaves of the former barn, coupled horizontal rectangular windows at the ground floor of the third bay (with altered glazing), and a six-light flush mullion window above (with two centre lights blocked off). Various other openings have also been altered. The fourth bay, made of random rubble with quoins, projects slightly and may be of earlier construction.
