Description

Ashenbottom Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1690, located in Ewood Bridge, Rawtenstall. The building is constructed of sandstone rubble with some quoins and has been rendered and whitewashed in parts. It features a stone slate roof with gable copings, gable chimneys, and a ridge chimney situated at the junction of the first and second bays. The farmhouse has a roughly cruciform plan with three bays and is single-depth, including a projecting porch at the junction of the first and second bays. There is a later extension at the rear of the second bays with an outshut in the re-entrant.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and is set below the level of a later roadway, which covers the ground floor of the first bay and the porch. The two-storey porch has a first-floor datestone with raised lettering "CB 1690" and an altered window above it. To the left, there is an altered first-floor window, while to the right are two horizontal rectangular windows on each floor, which were probably originally mullioned. The lower window is double-recessed with hoodmoulds, and there is a plain doorway situated between these windows. The right return wall features a two-light stone mullion window with a hoodmould, but all other openings on this wall and at the rear have been altered. Inside, original beams remain in place, although much of the interior has been altered.
