Description

Horncliffe House is a large house dating from the later 19th century, and now used as a home for the elderly. It is constructed of sandstone with ashlar facing and carved dressings, featuring hipped slate roofs and various chimneys. The house follows a double-pile plan with extensions to the rear. The front facade is symmetrical, with three bays, and includes a rectangular porch with a round-headed entrance arch and segmental-headed sash windows. It features a dentilled cornice, a balustraded parapet with an ornamental pediment in the centre, and corner finials. The ground floor has tripartite sash windows within shallow bays of ashlar, each with a dentilled cornice. The first floor windows have similar surrounds, with chamfered sills bearing central carvings and elaborately carved parapets with finials, the central window's finial being notably larger. The rear range has similar windows in its outer bays.

The interior is of particular interest, featuring richly ornamented doorcases, cornices, plaster ceilings, and a stairwell with painted panels built into the sides of the skylight. Three fireplaces are of note: one in the hall, carved from stone in the form of a mantel clock incorporating a round clock in the overmantel carving; another in the front right-hand room, displaying an Art Nouveau copper hood and side panels within a wooden architrave, which contains three oval pictures in the overmantel; and a third in the study at the rear, also in Art Nouveau style, with a copper hood and panelled surrounds, including alcoves and overmantel cupboards with ornamental hinges.
