Description

Nos. 250 to 264 on Holcombe Road are a row of millworkers' cottages, dated 1829 according to a plaque at No. 262, and have been renovated. They are constructed from sandstone rubble that is pebbledashed, except at the rear, and feature a stone slate roof with ridge chimney stacks. The cottages have a double-depth plan, with two storeys at the front and three storeys at the rear, which may have originally been designed as back-to-backs. The right-hand end, comprising Nos. 260 to 264, is set back from the others. Each cottage has plain doorways, with the exception of Nos. 250 and 252, which have doors on the left. There is one window on each floor, all of which are top-hung casements designed to imitate sash windows. Notably, the first floor of No. 262 features a datestone inscribed with "O. J. & J. D. 1829. Wear Foot. Musbury." The right gable wall has similar windows, as does the re-entrant wall of No. 266. The rear of the cottages also displays similar window arrangements across three levels, with doors located at the lower ground floor.
