Description
Three linked monuments to members of the Lonsdale family are located about 12 metres south of the Church of St. James. These tomb chests are dedicated to Richard Lonsdale, who died in 1776, Ellen Lonsdale, who died in 1770, and John Lonsdale, who died in 1816. They are made of dressed stone and feature panelled sides, with lids that are lettered and decorated. The three lids share a matching style, each displaying lengthy inscriptions in shouldered panels. The upper corners of the spandrels are adorned in relief with primitive-style winged faces. The inscription on the first tomb identifies Richard Lonsdale as a "Corn Chandler" from this town, while the second notes Ellen as the wife of John Lonsdale, described as a "MERCHANT of this Town," with the word "merchant" appearing in a hollow left by the erasure of another word.
