Description
Hacking Hall is a large house built in the early 17th century, constructed from sandstone rubble and topped with a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys with an attic. Its facade features one-bay cross-wings and a recessed one-bay centre, which includes a gabled dormer. On either side of the centre, there are projecting bays that rise to attic level, designed as gabled turrets. The right-hand turret serves as a porch on the ground floor.
The windows are mullioned, showcasing a hollow chamfer, outer chamfer, and hoods. The cross-wings have five-light windows on both the first and ground floors, while the attic features four-light windows. The angle turrets have three-light windows, except for the left-hand one on the ground floor, which has four lights. The central section of the facade includes a six-light window on the ground floor and a five-light window above. The porch door has a moulded surround and a Tudor-arched head.
Chimneys are located on the side walls of the cross-wings and the rear wall of the hall, all featuring projecting stacks. The east chimney shaft currently stops at the eaves but was previously dated '1607' with the initials 'T.L.' According to the Victoria County History, there is a corbelled garderobe projection on the first floor against this chimney stack.
Inside, the east wing has timber-framed partitioning, while the hall features a chamfered fireplace with a segmental arch and a similar smaller fireplace in the west wing. The attic contains closely-spaced trusses with curved principals and high collars. In front of the main facade, the garden is enclosed by a low rubble wall topped with a moulded coping.
