Description
Hacking Barn is a Grade II* cruck barn dating from around 1600. The walls are constructed of sandstone rubble, with modern timber boarding replacing the original timber framing. The roof is made of asbestos sheets. On the left side of the west wall, there is a chamfered doorway with a Tudor-arched head. Although the wide barn entrance on this side has been blocked, the entrance in the east wall remains accessible.
Inside, the barn features six cruck trusses made from heavy scantling. Each cruck blade has, or had, two spurs connecting it to a wall post, along with a collar and a yoke situated below the ridge. Blocking pieces on the backs of the blades support the purlins. The northern cruck truss has had its tie beam removed. Originally, the barn included wattle-and-daub infill, some of which is still visible above the collar. The upper part of the east wall retains some timber framing, with the wall plate and surviving studs indicating that each bay had one central stud and a cross rail. Straight braces extend from the posts and studs to the wall plate. Mortises in the soffit of the wall plate in the third bay from the south indicate that a wide barn door was located in this bay. A portion of the western wall plate also shows evidence of a similar door on that side. At the north end of the barn, there are two roof trusses featuring collars and chamfered and stopped tie beams. The barn is documented in detail, including a plan, section, and partial elevation, in a report by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England dated July 1977.
