Description

Steelands Farmhouse is a house, likely built in the late 18th century, with possible earlier elements and later modifications. The structure is made of rendered rubble with sandstone dressings and features a slate roof. It has three storeys, with a two-storey cross-wing on the east side that includes an attic.

The south front of the main range consists of two bays and showcases tripartite windows with plain stone surrounds and square mullions. There is a door located between the bays, which has a plain stone surround and a cornice hood above it, along with stone gutter brackets. The cross-wing on the right has one bay and features triple sash windows without glazing bars or mullions, set within cyma-moulded architraves that include false keystones. The attic is illuminated by an oculus, and the gable is topped with coping and kneelers.

In the center of the cross-wing, there is a chimney with three diagonal caps, while the left-hand gable of the house has a projecting stack with two diagonal caps. The north wall of the cross-wing has windows with plain stone surrounds, and above the first-floor window, there is a re-set section of a medieval cross head. The west wall, where it meets the main house, features a lead rainwater hopper inscribed with 'RHS 1776'. Although the interior was not fully inspected, it is noted to contain a staircase of late 18th-century design, characterized by an open string, ramped handrails, and turned balusters and newels.
