Description

The Observatory, located 100 metres south-east of the pond, was built in 1838 by Mr. Tuach of Preston and features an underground magnetic chamber added in 1866. Constructed from sandstone ashlar, it has a timber and glass lantern with a felted roof. The building is octagonal in shape and includes four projecting pedimented wings, which have prominent punched quoins and a central circular lantern. Each wall consists of one bay, and the windows are adorned with architraves that feature false keystones, some of which are cut through to accommodate telescope projections. The entrance door is situated in the gable of the north wing and is accessed by five external stone steps. This door also has an architrave with a false keystone and a bracketed cornice. The underground room extends to the south-east, ending with a retaining wall that includes a parapet, two architraves for blank openings, and concave flanking walls.
