Description

The Wiswell School War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1925, which also includes the name of an individual from the Second World War. It is constructed from local buff sandstone and is set into the east wall of the Old School, accompanied by a semi-circular forecourt made of traditional stone setts and cobbles.

The memorial features a sandstone tablet that lists the names of 14 former students of Wiswell School who died in the First World War, inscribed in well-carved letters highlighted with black paint. Above the names, the inscription reads: "REMEMBER/ THE OLD BOYS OF/ WISWELL SCHOOL/ WHO FELL IN THE WAR/ 1914-1918." The names are arranged alphabetically by surname and do not include ranks. Surrounding the tablet is a decorative roll-moulding, with the sill inscribed with the name of the individual from the Second World War, flanked by the years 1939 and 1945.

At the top of the tablet, a central tongue projects downwards, concave at the base, which supports a carved wheel-head cross painted gold. On either side of the tongue are relief wheels with recessed black-painted centres that contain swastikas in relief, also painted gold. The tablet is topped with a hood-mould that may date back to the 17th century.

Beneath the tablet is a shallow, rectangular plinth that resembles an altar. It has a recessed centre on the front face and a projecting table-like top that is depressed in the centre to create a trough suitable for planting.
