Description

49 Chaddock Street is a small town house built around 1840, with some alterations. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The house has a single-depth double-fronted plan that backs onto the east end of No. 11 Cross Street. It stands two-and-a-half storeys tall over a cellar and has a four-window range, with a one-window return on the Cross Street side. This side includes a first-floor sill-band, a plain frieze, and a moulded gutter cornice.

The central doorway is round-headed and features a set-in doorcase with engaged Tuscan columns, abaci, and a cornice, topped by a semicircular fanlight that has altered glazing. There are three windows on the ground floor, four on the first floor, and one in the attic, all of which are sashed without glazing bars, except for those flanking the door on the ground floor, which also have altered glazing. The house has a coped gable. The right-hand return, which is architecturally integrated with the terrace that includes Nos. 11 to 15 Cross Street, has one sashed window without glazing bars on each floor and a small cellar opening. The rear and interior of the house have not been inspected. This property is part of an almost complete set of late Georgian lower-middle class houses in the street.
