Description

Fishergate Baptist Church is a Baptist chapel built in 1858 by James Hibbert. It is constructed from coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan that is oriented at right angles to the street, with a tower on the south-east side, and is designed in the Romanesque style.

The church has two storeys above a basement, with a gabled symmetrical facade that resembles an open pediment. The ground floor features an enriched cornice and a wide round-headed arch in the center, which contains coupled Mozarabic-arched doorways accessed by eight steps, protected by wrought-iron railings. Flanking the central arch are coupled round-headed arches with round-headed windows, all surrounded by pilasters and heavily carved imposts. On the first floor, there is a large wheel window in the center, flanked by smaller windows, all with hoodmoulds. The corner pilasters and pediment also have enriched cornices.

The tower includes an enriched doorway at the ground floor, single lancets on the first floor, and coupled lancets on the second floor, all in the Mozarabic style with carved enrichments. The third floor features clock faces with enriched hoodmoulds, coupled oculi with similar hoodmoulds and pierced tracery, a Lombard frieze, and a prominent cornice with birds projecting from the corners, topped with a tall pyramidal roof. The east side wall has six tall, attenuated pointed arched two-light windows with twisted shafts. The rear gable has two two-light mullioned windows and a large wheel window. The interior has not been inspected.
