Description

Raby's Old Farmhouse is a cruck-framed farmhouse located approximately 25 metres southeast of Raby's Farmhouse. It dates from the 17th century or earlier and was altered in the 18th century. The building is constructed of brick with some boulder stone and features a corrugated iron roof that is set at two levels, with boarded eaves and brick chimneys on the ridge and at the left gable.

The farmhouse has a three-bay baffle-entry plan and is 1½ storeys high. The first bay has been rebuilt, raised, and extended to the rear during the 18th century. The east front, made of whitewashed brick, includes a segmental-headed doorway to the second bay aligned with the ridge chimney, another similar doorway on the right leading to the third bay, and two segmental-headed three-light casements to the left. There is also a two-light sliding-sash dormer that breaks the eaves of the second bay.

On the rear, the south half of the second bay wall is made of boulder stones. To the left, the foot of a cruck blade is exposed, resting on a padstone, and further left are vertical rectangular windows with one and two lights in the second and third bays, respectively.

Inside, the second bay features a full cruck truss without spurs or dorsals, with the lower part of the front blade severed. It also has a heck with a shouldered heck-post, which may be a reused wall post, and a ceiling likely inserted in the 18th century. The third bay contains a large axial beam and joists that have tongue-stopped chamfers. The roof of the second bay is made up of closely spaced rafters.
