Description

Number 27 Winckley Square is a large town house that was formerly part of a school and is now used as offices. It dates from around 1830 and has been altered since its original construction. The building is made of red brick laid in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. It has a double-depth, double-fronted plan and stands three storeys high over a basement, featuring four bays.

The exterior includes an ashlar plinth, a sill-band at the first floor, a plain frieze, and a moulded cornice. The doorway in the third bay is notable for its large doorcase, which is flanked by engaged Ionic columns and features a plain frieze and a moulded cornice with a blocking course. The inner surround is hollow-moulded and there is a modern fixed glazed door with a rectangular overlight that includes glazing bars and margin panes.

The windows on the ground and first floors are 12-pane sashes, while the second-floor windows were unglazed at the time of the survey. There is one cellar opening to the left. The interior has not been inspected but is believed to have been remodelled.
