Description

No. 4 is a large town house, now used as offices, built around 1800 for Nicholas Grimshaw. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. It has a double-depth, double-fronted plan, featuring three storeys over a basement and five symmetrical bays. The ashlar basement serves as a plinth, and there is a sill-band at the first floor level along with a prominent moulded cornice.

The central doorway is accessed by three steps and is framed by a pedimented doorcase supported by slender engaged Tuscan columns that have fluted caps and square abaci. The doorcase also features a frieze with five blocks of fluting, plain jambs with small imposts, a semi-circular fanlight, and a panelled door. The ground and first floors have 4-pane sashed windows, while the second floor has unhorned 9-pane sashes, all equipped with raised sills and wedge lintels.

The basement areas on both sides of the door are protected by iron railings with dogbars, featuring an urn finial to the left of the steps and mostly knob finials, including on the dog-bars. The building has stone gable copings and chimneys located on the side walls. The right-hand return wall, which faces Winckley Street, includes a doorway and two windows at ground floor level with moulded achitraves, as well as an attic window with radiating glazing bars. At the rear, there is a full-height round-headed stair-window with radiating glazing bars.

Inside, the building features an open-well staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed mahogany handrail. This was the second house built in Winckley Square, following No. 11 Winckley Street.
