Description
This barn, located approximately 15 meters south of Catforth Hall Farmhouse, is likely from the 16th century or earlier. It features a seven-bay cruck frame that is mostly clad in red brick, with some remnants of sandstone rubble in the west wall. The east wall and north gable are rendered, and the roof is covered with corrugated sheet material.
The most significant aspect of the barn is its interior frame, which includes six full cruck trusses with hips at both ends. While the trusses are mostly open, they have collars and yokes, along with either spurs or vacant housings for them. These trusses support a pair of trenched purlins, which are reinforced with wind braces above and below; some of these braces are curved while others are straight. Although the current cladding has gabled ends, the main structural elements of the former roof hips are still present, making this feature of unusual, if not unique, historical interest in this county.
