Description
The Boer War Memorial, located approximately 75 metres south of Overleigh House, was erected in 1904 and designed by the sculptor T. Hodgkinson from Preston. This war memorial is made of grey granite, polished red and pink granite, and features bronze plaques. It has an obelisk shape, standing 25 feet high, and consists of two square steps made of unpolished grey granite, a short square pedestal of polished red granite with a moulded base and cornice, and an obelisk made of polished pink Scotch granite sourced from Peterhead quarries.
The bronze plaques display raised lettering and decoration. The plaque on the south side reads: "IN MEMORY OF / THE OFFICERS, NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS AND MEN / LOYAL NORTH LANCASHIRE REGIMENT / WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE SERVICE OF / THEIR COUNTRY / DURING THE / SOUTH AFRICAN WAR 1899-1902 / ERECTED BY THEIR COMRADES." The plaques on the other three sides list the names of those who served by Battalion. Originally, the memorial was located in the Market Place and was likely moved to its current site in 1926, coinciding with the erection of the Cenotaph.
