Description
Nos. 5 and 6 Fishergate Hill are a pair of townhouses, now converted into flats, built around 1840 with some alterations. They are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, although the rear is now rendered, and feature sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The buildings have a double-depth plan, with each house being single-fronted and without back extensions.
They rise three storeys above cellars and have two windows on the first floor and two on the second, although No. 5 is slightly wider. The first floor includes a sill-band, a plain frieze, and a moulded cornice, with a vertical joint separating the two houses. Each house has a doorway on the left side, accessed by two steps, featuring a doorcase with engaged Ionic columns and an entablature that has a cornice and blocking course. The doorcases have deep cavetto jambs and a moulded lintel, with a four-panel door and a rectangular overlight; the overlight for No. 5 has geometrical panes.
Both houses have sash windows without glazing bars, with the ground floor window of No. 5 being larger than the others and adorned with a moulded architrave and cornice. The other windows have raised sills and wedge lintels. There are chimney stacks located in front of the ridge at the junction of the two houses and at the right-hand gable. The rear and interior of the buildings have been altered.
