Description
Lower Townhouse Farm is a Grade II* listed house dating from the 17th century, with multiple phases of construction. The building is made of rubble with large stone quoins and features a stone slate roof. It has a three-cell main range and a rear wing. The front of the house includes a single-storey porch made of massive stone blocks, topped with a slate roof, and featuring a moulded Tudor arched door.
On the ground floor, there is a single light window where the mullion has been removed, along with two two-light windows, a seven-light window with a king mullion, and a five-light window. All ground floor windows are adorned with drip labels. The first floor has two three-light windows and one four-light window, along with a small 18th-century opening. A stepped chimney is located on the right-hand return, next to a two-light window on the ground floor and a five-light window on the first floor. The rear gabled wing, which likely dates from the 17th century, features two- and three-light windows.
Inside, there is an original oak screen, believed to be medieval, with decorative carving. The site is associated with Cluniac monks, although the house itself is of a later date. Further development details can be found in the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England publication.
