Description

Norway House, formerly known as the Co-operative Emporium, is a co-operative store built in 1906. The building is constructed of stone and features a slate roof. It stands three storeys tall, with a basement floor in the western block, and consists of eight bays. The ground floor showcases shop fronts beneath a cornice, supported by carved art nouveau corbels that represent the co-operative movement.

On the first floor, there are wide windows with leaded lights in their heads, except for the fourth bay, which has a four-light mullion and transom window above a segmental-arched entrance to an arcade, complete with a wrought iron balcony railing. The second-floor windows are three-light with transoms, and the second, fourth, and seventh bays are highlighted by arched heads. The second and seventh bay windows are designed in a Venetian style, and the mullions are in pillar form. A string course continues over the arch, featuring a keystone. The building is topped with a shaped parapet and steep gables above the emphasized bays, and a dome on a short colonnade is positioned at the junction with the left return.
