Description
The Wallace Hartley Memorial is a monument erected in 1915 by The Bromsgrove Guild. It features bronze statues set on a white Portland stone pedestal.
The memorial consists of a tall, square pedestal with a deep, moulded base. The four faces of the pedestal taper slightly inward and culminate in a moulded band, above which is a tall, concave-shaped base that supports a bronze portrait bust of Wallace Hartley. The bust depicts Hartley from the shoulders up, dressed in a jacket, waistcoat, shirt, and tie. Flanking the bust are two small bronze allegorical figures seated on the stone base. The figure on the left represents Music and holds a lyre, while the figure on the right represents Valour and holds a mask and a wreath.
The front face of the pedestal features a dedication in leaded lettering that reads: "WALLACE / HARTLEY / BANDMASTER OF / THE R.M.S. TITANIC / WHO PERISHED IN / THE FOUNDERING OF THAT VESSEL / APRIL 15TH 1912 / ERECTED BY VOLUNTARY / CONTRIBUTIONS TO COM- / MEMORATE THE HEROISM / OF A NATIVE OF THIS / TOWN." The pedestal is set on a plinth made of two steps formed of concrete blocks.
