Description

Brierfield Mills is a mill building dated 1868, constructed of stone with a roof that is partly slate and partly corrugated. The structure has 2, 3, and 4 storeys, situated on a sloping site. The northern block consists of two parts: the section on the left is made of rock-faced stone and has 2 storeys with 10 bays. It features tall, large-pane windows on the ground floor and semi-circular headed windows above, connected by a continuous string course. There is a large, semi-circular arch-headed doorway with vermiculated voussoirs, leading to a modern door with a fanlight, and twin semi-circular headed windows above. The section has a plain parapet with bold dentillation and a small pediment.

The section on the right is built of ashlar and also has 2 storeys with 6 bays. Its windows have semi-circular heads that form a continuous arcade, with alternate voussoirs emphasized. The first-floor windows are similar but have segmental heads with stressed keystones. Above the doorway, there are semi-circular headed windows. This section features a dentilled parapet with a broken pediment.

At the rear, there is a clock tower that rises in four stages, with a circular base and a square tower. It has a small window with a segmental head, and the clock face is set in a semi-circular arched head that extends as a string course. The tower is topped with a dentillated cornice and a pyramidal roof, making it a prominent feature on the valley side.
