Description
Helks is a house, likely built in the early 18th century, along with farm buildings that probably date from the later 18th century. The structure is made of sandstone rubble, featuring a stone slate roof for the farm buildings and a slate roof for the house. The house has two storeys with one bay on each side of a single-storey gabled porch. The windows are irregularly spaced and have rebated and chamfered surrounds. The door, located to the right of the front porch wall, has a stone surround, and there is a chimney on the right side.
To the right of the house is a farm building with a door that has plain reveals on the left. To the left is a barn that features a wide entrance with a segmental arch and a cruck re-used as an inner lintel. There is also a door with plain reveals on the left side of the barn. Inside the house, the right-hand room contains axial main joists and a shouldered fireplace typical of the 18th century. Additionally, there is a recess in the ceiling in front of the fireplace designed for hanging meat to dry.
