Description
Summersgill Farmhouse is a house dating from the late 17th century, constructed from sandstone rubble with a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys, and the north wall features a single-storey extension, likely from the 19th century, which extends forward on the left side. To the right of this extension is a three-light window with flat-faced mullions. On the first floor to the left, there is a three-light window with rebated and chamfered mullions, and to its right is another window with a rebated and chamfered surround. The main entrance is located in the extension, at the angle with the main house, and is sheltered by a modern timber porch. This entrance has a re-set moulded surround with a segmental head inscribed with 'RA 1672 IR'. The right gable wall features a projecting stack with offsets, while the left gable has a drip course above two three-light ground-floor windows with rebated surrounds and channelled flat-faced mullions. On the first floor, there are two three-light rebated and chamfered mullioned windows under a hood, and above these is a similar two-light blocked attic window. Inside, above the door from the extension into the main house, there is a plaque shaped like an inverted heart, inscribed with 'RRE 1725'. At the rear of the original house, there is a spiral stone staircase, with the treads now covered in timber. The right-hand room features an exposed chamfered main ceiling joist.
